We had our first set of introductory hospitality courses in service, kitchen, food and beverage operations and rooms divisions. Even though our batch is just 67 people it was refreshing to meet so many different people from different ethnic backgrounds in one place. Even if not ethnically different, each of their personal lives and histories indicated a mixed global background. We met Italians who lived in Korea and Chinese who were raised in Malaysia.
It was also interesting because most of the students in the Post Graduate Diploma program have previously worked in different industries other than hospitality. We had a chance to learn about different careers. The diversity in prior work experience was surprising. We have students who previously worked in engineering, modelling and even the army!
Hospitality and respect is recognized differently in each culture. I think that’s why it is crucial to understand when certain behavior can be assumed offensive and how to appease future customers with the correct cultural behavior. I hope that by the end of this course I get to learn more about the different traditions and norms across cultures.
Les Roches gave us the chance to get to know each other a little better by organizing drinks in the lobby during the week. It is definitely going to be an interesting year ahead.
