From Les Roches to Ritz-Carlton Manager in Training program

Les Roches Digital Marketing team caught up with Hans Hachfeld at the recent Dubai Alumni Reunion. Hans has joined the Voyage Global Leadership Development Program – the Manager in Training program (MIT) of the Ritz Carlton and is based at their flagship hotel, the Grand Canal, Abu Dhabi.

Hans graduated from the BBA in hospitality management program in 2014 with a specialization in Event Management.

How did Les Roches prepare you for work life?

Les Roches really prepared me for work life through offering the possibility of doing internships all around the world.  I feel that when I went out into the real world it was not as scary as I thought it would be because I was already exposed to so much while still being within Les Roches.

What is the Manager in Training program like?

It’s really exciting. Every day there is something new.

For 18 months I will be working in 3 different key departments within the Rooms Division.  I am currently based in the Villas for 6 months, where I run the team and manage the day-to-day operations. I will then move to the Housekeeping department for another 6 months, and then finally to Guest Services for another 6 months where I will complete my program.

What happens when you complete your MIT program?

When I complete the MIT program I will move to an Assistant Manage or even a Manager position, depending on my performance, of course.  For these 18 months they will be training me to become a manager, to become a leader within the industry. And I will take every moment of this opportunity to better myself within the hotel.

What are the three most important aspects of being part of the Management in Training program?

First, you have to be very friendly – you can meet the good and the bad and you have to find the balance.

Second, accept everyone for who they are, find out what their strengths are, find out what their weaknesses are and then work with these.

Third, you have to be flexible. The number of times I get asked to help here or to help there. ‘Can you do this? Can you do that?’  Sometimes, I might not know everything, but I ask the questions and in the end, everything works out.

Where do I want to be by the end of my program?

It’s a good question and to be honest, where I end up – it does not matter.  What I do know, is that this MIT is designed to make us future leaders of the hotel company.  The Ritz-Carlton has many new hotels that are opening around the world and they plan to launch us Voyagers into these new hotels, to help with the openings and to help guide these hotels to attain to The Ritz-Carlton standard that we all know and what they are renowned for.
